Land and Sea: Abstracts of the Imagination

Land and Sea: Abstracts of the Imagination is an exhibition put on by the River Valley Artist Collective. All of the members live in the Connecticut River Valley, a place rich in the natural beauty of forests, fields, the Connecticut River, and beaches on Long Island Sound. Those same elements are the inspiration for their body of work. This show consists of abstract landscapes executed by 16 of their 60 talented artists, some of whom have had the pleasure of showing at the Hygienic in the past. The materials and techniques used are as varied as the artists themselves; watercolor, acrylic, oils, glass, monotype, and photography are all represented. River Valley Artists is a loosely formed group of artists hailing from the tri-town region of Essex, Chester, and Deep River. The group was formed in 2018, initially to organize a studio tour of the members’ workplaces in the three towns. It has since grown to year-round shows in various galleries in the towns.
